Model vs model

Shopify vs Salla: the same model, translated

Salla is not a Shopify clone — it is the same business architecture rebuilt around assumptions Shopify never had to make. Read them side by side and the localization argument stops being abstract.

The verdict up front

Both sell a store builder and make their real money on payments. The difference is the default: Shopify assumes a card, English, and a global shipping network; Salla assumes cash on delivery, Arabic, Mada, and a merchant selling through Instagram and WhatsApp. Those defaults are the entire product — and the reason a Saudi merchant picks Salla despite Shopify being larger in every measurable way.

Shared foundations: subscription as the floor, payments as the business, merchant success as the retention engine, and a store builder that is really a customer-acquisition device for the payment product.

Frequently asked questions

Is Salla just Shopify for Saudi Arabia?

The architecture is the same; the defaults are not. Payment methods, language direction, the merchant's starting channel and the shipping ecosystem are all different, and those differences are what a merchant actually experiences.

Should a MENA merchant use Shopify or Salla?

Shopify if you sell internationally and already take cards. Salla if your customers pay by Mada or cash and find you on Instagram — the friction Shopify creates there is the whole reason Salla exists.

Why do store builders make more from payments than subscriptions?

Subscription revenue scales with merchant count; payment revenue scales with merchant GMV. Since GMV grows faster than merchant count for any healthy platform, the take rate eventually dominates — which is why both companies push their own payment rails so hard.
