What Grindstone Accelerator actually is

Grindstone, run in partnership with Knife Capital, targets a different stage than most African programs: existing businesses with revenue that need structure to become fundable or acquirable. The 6–9-month curriculum works through governance, financial readiness, IP and growth systems. The program itself is sponsor-financed and takes no upfront equity; Knife Capital and Grindstone Ventures invest separately in standouts.

Its alumni list — iKubu (acquired by Garmin), TaxTim, PayFast — reflects that exit-readiness focus. Regional variants run pan-African (online) and in the UK alongside the South African flagship.

What they look for

The bar you need to clear before the application is worth sending.

  • Post-revenue startups — this is a scale-up program, not an idea accelerator.

  • Founders willing to fix unglamorous fundamentals: governance, finance, IP.

  • South African or African scale-ups eyeing institutional rounds or acquisition.

  • Commitment to a 6–9-month structured engagement.
